BUR OAK — Quercus macrocarpaThe largest of all American oaks, this oak is commonly found from San Antonio to Canada and across to the Dakotas. This tree will get under proper conditions 120 feet in height and have a spread of fifty feet. The acorns in the fall are about one and one half inches across. The leaves are about nine inches long and six inches wide. This tree usually grows straight up eight or nine feet before its first branch. Give this tree lots of water its first year, the size of the acorns is dependent on the amount of water its gets during the growing year. It usually takes 7-10 years before its first acorns are produced. |
